What WHITES in South Africa need to hear ... one of the questions asked in the Reconciliation Day interview with the very talented, Queen of the Streets, Ntsiki Mazwai. Controversial? Challenging? ... or just a simple truth? Have we really integrated as a society after 1994? "At least many white girls are getting a bit of ass," said Ntsiki with her tongue firmly in cheek.
Ntsiki uses words to heal and push the social issues close to her heart. Her song uRONGO became the biggest selling song in the country in 2005. In 2006 she released her debut album, MaMiya independently. She spent most of 2011 promoting her book, WENA, around the country and continues to enlighten audiences with insightful poetry, music and her passion for life. Refreshing to have had such an energetic and authentic young lady on the iStart2 Show.
Listen to the podcast of Ntsiki's show which includes her hits uRONGO and Sweet Poison:

I feel so strong ... PJ Powers (Part 1)
A date with PJ Powers. Something I have always dreamt about... and then, one day it all came true...
And yes, of course I felt a bit intimidated that I was going to be in the studio with one of the biggest icons in South African music. It is then that all those "what if" questions start running through your mind...
- What if she's just a spoilt diva?
- What if i go blank during the interview... ( and yes... it happened)
- What if she doesn't like my questions?
- What if we don't click at all?
- Will she take hands with iStart2?
- Will we pass the stringent criteria she use before deciding to take hands on a project?
- Will she "make" the criteria WE set ... someone who does it with heart, someone who is realistic about the amount of work that goes into a project like iStart2... someone who "understands" the bigger picture...
- What if ... what if ... what if...
But this day turned out to be an incredible day... one of those days I will always treasure... There she was in the studio, beautiful, vulnerable but strong, happy, full of wisdom.... and humble... someone that does not only talk about sustainability issues, but someone who lives what she believes in. I can now understand why she continues to touch the hearts of so many people. Dreams do come true. And .... there is a difference between "goodness" and "greatness"...

Bring back the humans ... Somerfaan
At Nel aka Somerfaan is described as a maverick South African electronic music visionary.
Born before technology. Frustrated on the ‘plaas’ where he was born, because there was no radio-signal, thus, no music . . . the young Somerfaan was forced to create alternatives. He resorted to banging out beats (with plug-spanners) on any found farm implement whilst singing out loud to the rhythmic cacophonies.
In this period, it was widely rumoured that one day, while working in the mielie fields, he was abducted by aliens for an undisclosed period.
We chat to Somerfaan about his music, his sustainability initiatives, the abduction and his music career. He is passionate about making a difference and give some ideas we can follow to creating a sustainable world. We also listen to some of his earlier music, Morning is Broken featuring Chris Chameleon and two of the songs from his latest cd, Laaste Somer: Bring back the Humans (beautifully sung by Jane Rademeyer) and Don't worry I got you (with his good friend Cito)
At believes "charity starts at home - save water, save energy and be good to the people working for you". Words of wisdom from one of our most passionate iStart2 Ambassadors

Confessions of a misfit ... Mokokoma Mokhonoana
A man that would rather fill your head with principles that you can apply to your life tomorrow, instead of what happened yesterday. And he argues in his book, Confessions of a misfit, that YOU (Yes, you!) are a genius. The genius in you awaits... This book of wisdoms would make a great Xmas gift.... :-)
Was great having Mokokoma on the show this week. He is a philosopher, a humanitarian, an essayist, a CARTOONIST (and will be designing some interesting designs for the iStart2 T-Shirt campaign), a social-critic, an aphorist, a satirist, a social-entrepreneur, and... an overall nonconformist - indeed a very talented man.
We listen to his favourite music, talk about his work as an artist and chat about his book. Right!

If you go away ... Karin Hougaard (Part 2)
Sheeez! Have just listened to Karin again, talking about her experiences in the Netherlands, what it felt like to perform to 17 000 people three nights in a row in Antwerp, how she integrated sustainability themes like collaboration, new territory, open systems and her motto , "Reduce, Re-use and Recycle" into her life, her music and her new cd Alien Sky.
Karin's insights, passion and inspiration is probably one of the biggest driving forces that will contribute to making the iStart2 Challenge an initiative that will move many people to start leaving sustainable footprints. Karin doesn't just talk... she inspires and excites us to start living the change we want to see.
We listen to a few songs:
"For you" - a song Karin wrote as an anthem for her country, South Africa, and "Frightened Heart" about how it feels to be in unfamiliar territory (from her new cd, Alien Sky). Karin also sings Queen, "You take my breath away" and one of her Dutch songs, "Bij Mij" - powerful and intimate.
That which she could not put into words or music – she now captures in her paintings. The painting below is aptly called " We do all kinds of fencing"
What a privilege and honour it is to work with such a multi talented individual. I salute you Karin Hougaard! Click "play" to listen to the podcast of our show.

Comedy is serious business. According to LadyRae it is more serious than doing number two. Nadiem Solomon wonders whether Jesus, Buddha and Mohamed would have had twitter and facebook accounts.
A great show with two serious comedians. We talk about climate change ("When your property becomes seafront property") , green sex ("Sex with Martians"), religion ( "I'm Muslim but saving up to be Jewish" - Nadiem) and a serious look at sustainability issues affecting the world.

Sophiatown Memories - Malindy Myeza
"Learn to be empathetic with people - be yourself ... be normal", was the the biggest thing I learnt from Beyers Naude" - Ma Malindy Myeza. (iStart2 Ambassador for the Elderly)
What an honour and privilege to have this exceptional Ugogo in the studio. Activist, teacher ( "Half a loaf is poison, so I quit teaching") , Senior vice President of the Council Of Churches, "second" wife to Beyers Naude, unsung heroine of the 1976 Soweto riots, recipient of the Order of Baobab from President Thabo Mbeki... a life full of too many memories and highlights to mention.
Listening to Ma Malindy gives me hope for the challenges we face in our country. She had to overcome so many obstacles in her life but is still smiling and doing community work from her humble home in Soweto at the age of 76.

Frightened Heart... Alien Sky
Here this ancient heart flutters behind encaging fingers...
flapping
flapping
frantically
fearfully
craving...
craving to take to the sky.
- Karin Hougaard
(From her CD Alien Sky)
Some music leaves one silent ... your soul shutters when you hear the beautiful sounds ... her incredible voice... and the inner heart of one of the most divine artists South Africa has ever produced.
One can listen to Karin's music night after night but it sounds uniquely different every time and leaves you with intensified feelings of satisfaction.
Just love it! :-)

The Big Case
Pierre, Scotty Cundill and Thato Sehularo
iStart2 Journey on Radio Today Monday at 18h30
Great show we had yesterday! Scotty Cundill, courageous activist talked to us about the BIG CASE against the four major banks in South Africa. Have you ever gone through a tough time and tried negotiating with your bank? Have you lost your house in the process? Came out of it bruised and stressed? Not easy to take on the big bad wolf...
Scotty and his team of legal representatives are seeking to halt all legal action by banks.
Scotty and his team of legal representatives are seeking to halt all legal action by banks.
Billy joel wrote a beautiful song, innocent man, that so accurately describes the big case:
Some people stay far away from the door
If there's a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by
Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie
I know you're only protecting yourself
I know you're thinking of somebody else
If there's a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by
Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie
I know you're only protecting yourself
I know you're thinking of somebody else
Do you think this will only happen to somebody else??
Banks are lending out computer-generated promises used as money, but the assets they foreclose on and the lives they destroy, are very real. If you have a bank account you have to hear this...
Find out more about the big case by reading about the BIG CASE on www.thebigcase.co.za. Let me know what you think... please email me at pierre@istart2.com. Podcast below:

Caretaker? Transient? - Prof Mervyn King & Gail Gilmore
Today we talk to Dr Mervyn King. A committed South African, dedicated campaigner for justice and fairness, an accessible and selfless man. A former judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa, he is currently the Chairman of the Global Reporting Initiative and the Association of Business Administrators of Southern Africa. He is best known for chairing the King Committee on Corporate Governance, which issued three comprehensive reports in 1994, 2002 and 2009 endorsing an integrated and inclusive approach to corporate governance in South Africa.
While in Amsterdam I had the privilege of befriending the wonderful and talented Gail Gilmore – a woman with a passion and a voice that is larger than life itself. Gail is keen on visiting South Africa and we hope to achieve this one day soon thru a collaboration with iStart2. We listen to two beautiful songs Habanera and Chanson de Boheme from Carmen.

Tribute to Dr Ivan May
Today we pay tribute to Dr Ivan May. A truly remarkable man who touched the lives and hearts of so many people from all walks of life. Ivan is missed by many whom he inspired to live lives that are worthwhile. He loved music and the arts, the environment and Mickey Mouse! The Disney character, May said, embodied ‘May’s Laws’: Nothing is impossible; everything is an opportunity and there is always room for ice cream!
Ivan and I began working together on the iStart2 initiative early in 2010. I was very fortunate and privileged to have the opportunity to spend time with him, weeks before his untimely passing, talking about the future iStart2 journey.
Today’s show also includes the beautiful music of an amazing, unconventional woman, Jennifer Kestis Ferguson, from her cd, aptly titled, "Untimely".
