Gaucho ... Gina Shoemaker

"We gotta do much more than believe if we really wanna change things," sings Dave Matthews in his beautiful song, Gaucho. A woman who takes his advice to heart is horticulturist, Gina Shoemaker.

She is passionate about bringing life back to the soils and chats to us, among other things, about Landscaping, Rain Water Harvesting, Commercial Worm Farms and composting. Gina is on a mission to create jobs in South Africa and works closely with Food & Trees for Africa to ensure a greener future. She strongly believes in educating the youth to change mindsets around growing organic food and recycling of organic waste.

Gina Shoemaker: " iStart2 recycle organic waste"

Gina says: "Six days after planting, the left side was fertilized with worm castings harvested from Commercial worm farms at Food and Trees for Africa's Retabising FEED farm. Four tons of agricultural waste was recycled and here are the results!!!!" See for yourself. Get in touch with Gina at Green Earth Landscaping

Start2Sing : Lyrics

I am because you are, Children of the earth
A planet crying out to those who hear
And when we join our hands together as the brotherhood of man
We start to see a new tomorrow drawing near…

I start to sing a song of joy
I start to dance a dance so free
I start to shout a shout of hope for the world to hear
Now let us sing from the mountain side
Every voice joined in deepest pride
For we sing the soul and cry of Africa

I START TO SING A SONG OF JOY
I START TO DANCE A DANCE SO FREE
I START TO SHOUT A SHOUT OF HOPE FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR
NOW LET US SING FROM THE MOUNTAIN SIDE
EVERY VOICE JOINED IN DEEPEST PRIDE
FOR WE SING THE SOUL AND CRY OF AFRICA

We’ll take care of the weak, the endangered and the old
We’ll lead the way across the nation
We want to leave behind a legacy for generations to enjoy
For what we save today is tomorrow’s provision

ISTART2 SING A SONG OF JOY
ISTART TO DANCE A DANCE SO FREE
ISTART TO SHOUT A SHOUT OF HOPE FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR
NOW LET US SING FROM THE MOUNTAIN SIDE
EVERY VOICE JOINED IN DEEPEST PRIDE
FOR WE SING THE SOUL AND CRY OF AFRICA

I plant the thought right now
A seed in your mind and your heart right now
The future for all right now
Depends on what we start right now
The path that we walk right now
Leads to the light or the dark right now
The journey we embark on now
Decides victory or loss right now
I start to get up and know my place
My place in the big picture
I start to get up and own my space

My space in a world which is
Full of untold wonders, riches
Handed down by our predecessors
As a steward for generations
In the future
Here's to the future!

I start to sing a song of joy
I start to dance a dance so free
I start to shout a shout of hope for the world to hear
Now let us sing from the mountain side
Every voice joined in deepest pride
For we sing the soul and cry of Africa

ISTART2 SING A SONG OF JOY
ISTART TO DANCE A DANCE OF FREE
ISTART TO SHOUT A SHOUT OF HOPE FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR
NOW LET US SING FROM THE MOUNTAIN SIDE
EVERY VOICE JOINED IN DEEPEST PRIDE
FOR WE SING THE SOUL AND CRY OF AFRICA

I start to forgive, and when I start to forgive…
I start to live again, and when I start to live again…
I start to receive..

News Flash: Pops Mohamed on 21 Icons

21 ICONS South Africa features the seventh icon of its second season: acclaimed musician and producer, Pops Mohamed, who has been playing, protecting, and nurturing traditional ways of making music in South Africa for the last 30 to 40 years.

“We’re like a pregnant country. We keep giving birth to good things, bad things, whatever it is, but we are here now.” - Pops Mohamed

Mohamed sees his commitment to preserving traditions as “futuristic”. He explains this view: “It’s the same as if you’re having a problem with your hard drive. If we don’t back up things, we lose them. It’s the same with culture. If you don’t know where you’re coming from, you’ll never know where you’re going to. In order to move forward in life you have to take a few steps backwards. You can’t just live for now or live in the future without understanding your background. It’s not possible."

POPS MOHAMED in the making of 21 Icons, will be screened on Sunday on SABC 3 at 8:27pm.
