Whiter shade of pale ... Lorraine Jenks

An avid follower and advocate of all things green for some 40 years, motivational speaker Lorraine Jenks’ passion for preserving the environment and sustainable living started in the 70s. Today, that passion has evolved into a remarkable dedication to teaching, educating, motivating and putting right some of the environmental disasters that business, its brands and consumers have made and continue to make on a daily basis.

The Little Green Queen, Lorraine Jenks
"Think before you buy"

Her brainchild and business, Hotelstuff, was born in 2001 and was followed in 2009 by its sister, Greenstuff, a green-only online procurement tool. Lorraine and Greenstuff stood at the forefront of the green wave in South Africa, breaking new ground in many sectors.

Lorraine has enjoyed wide industry acclaim for her tireless work in the field of sustainability with many an award on her proverbial mantelpiece. On the South African speaking circuit, Lorraine is widely respected and known for her fresh, engaging signature style and impactful delivery, often laced with well-placed humour. Her environmental messages are hard hitting yet practical and audiences leave with the beginnings of a fundamental mind shift, empowered with insight and real-time solutions with which to start a greener journey.

We chatted to Lorraine about the challenges we face as a nation and the questions we need to ask our politicians. A feisty woman determined to speak her mind on Monsanto, the Dalai Lama and flip-flop fundraising to save the Rhino. "I sound like a crystal clutching tree hugger. Had a chance to be controversial, deliberately, to make people take note," she remarked after the Radio Show.

My Sustainable Hemp House ... Tony Budden

Tony Budden is confident: "Now is the time to come together and move forward to a green future." This is a man who built a house out of weed (Yes, the cannabis plant). He is a tireless advocate of growing this amazing, renewable material and showing just how exceptional this plant really is. Overcoming various legal and practical obstacles, Tony worked to realize one of South Africa's most sustainable homes.

"I start2 believe in my own power to make a difference"
- Tony Budden

The house sits comfortably upon the foot of the mountain range overlooking Noordhoek, Cape Town, with unobstructed views of the wetlands and the beautiful shore line.

The home is designed to showcase hemp's incredible potential as a building material and convince the government to remove obstacles for widespread commercial development of one of the most resilient, versatile, and fast-growing carbon sinks on earth.

We chat to Tony about the home he built and the incredible potential of Hemp as a building material. Because authorities do not distinguish between hemp and the euphoric THC-laden "dagga" plant, its benefits as a super-sustainable building material have largely gone untapped.
